Lecture 3 by Dr. Philip B. Payne

Lecture Three: “1 Timothy 2:11 – 3:13 Is Compatible with Biblical Equality” by Dr. Philip B. Payne

In this lecture Dr. Payne explains why and how 1 Timothy 2:11–3:13 is compatible with the equality of men and women in Christ.  He shows from the context, the wording of the passage, the flow of the argument, and in light of the deception of women in Ephesus by false teachings, Paul is prohibiting one thing: the unauthorized assumption of authority by women to teach men. Instead, they should respect men and learn in all submission to the truth. The subject of the requirements for overseer in chapter 3 is “anyone.” There are no masculine pronouns or any other restriction to men in these requirements. Paul excludes polygamists but not women from the office of overseer or deacon. Women are specifically included in the requirements for deacons in 3:11, so the “monogamous” requirement in 3:12 must not exclude women here or in 3:2, just as “monogamous” applies to both genders in English.

A video of the lecture is available in the Video Gallery under “Resources  .
