Book Reviews
To date we have only two short book reviews.  We hope to have more soon.
Discovering Biblical Equality: Complementarity without Hierarchy, General Editors: Ronald W. Pierce and Rebecca Merrill Groothuis, IVP Academic, Second edition © 2005 (528 pages). Discovering Biblical Equality is "the result of a collaborative effort of a diverse group of evangelical scholars united...by two convictions: that the Bible is the fully inspired and authoritative Word of God and that it teaches gender equality in church, home and society." The twenty-nine articles are arranged in five sections: Setting the Stage (the Historical Backdrop), Looking to Scripture (the Biblical Texts), Thinking It Through (Logical and Theological Perspectives), Addressing the Issues (Hermeneutical and Cultured Perspectives), and Living It Out (Practical Applications). Together they are an excellent introduction to biblical equality.
Man and Woman, One in Christ: An Exegetical and Theological Study of Paul’s Letters, Philip B. Payne, Zondervan, 2009 (511 pages). Payne (PhD Cambridge) has taught New Testament studies at Cambridge, Trinity Evangelical, Gordon-Conwell, Bethel, and Fuller. He is also the founder and president of Linguistics Software. In Man and Women, One in Christ he condenses thirty years of research on Paul’s view of women. He rigorously explores the influences on Paul, his practice as a church leader, and his teachings through his letters. His conclusion is that Paul’s theology, teaching, and practice consistently affirm the equality of men and women. This book is a must read for anyone who desires to understand Paul’s statements about women and their role in the home and the church. His exhaustive exegetical analysis of 1 Corinthians 11:2-16 (107 pages) and I Timothy 2:8-15 (154 pages) are particularly helpful.
